Leaks The Only Place For You and Me + Scared + Sleep The Dream
One of my favorite things about music discovery is uncovering how an artist’s sound has been influenced. In this case, with 17 year old Tom Guida, he says artists like Shlohmo, Mount Kimbie, Gold Panda, Burial, Four Tet, and James Blake have helped shape his current sound. For me, after several listens, Mount Kimbie, and James Blake are apparent, as well as one other name artist that I wasn’t expecting. That artist is Youth Lagoon, and I’ll tell you why.
Leaks music has this fragility to it that can only come from a painstakingly earnest outlook on the world. Like nothing else matters except this very instance, so we have to pour every ounce of energy into making it last. It’s taking solace in a single moment, wrapping yourself up in it and being so absorbed that you don’t notice the hours passing by. It’s not as easy as it sounds.
Where James Blake’s vocals and lyrics run deep and rip through your emotions like a knife slowly plunging into your flesh, Leaks high pitched, voice creeps slowly under your skin burying itself deep in your veins, until you feel chills running through your body. It’s the Youth Lagoon and even Gem Club effect, the raw, unadulterated emotion, blended with electronic pulses, twinkling bells and clicks similar to Shlohmo and Mount Kimbie, and the faintest of RnB style, that creates a unique blend of genres, sounds…and well feelings, that is really something.
Oh yeah, and he’s 17.
Leaks first EP Twelve : Thirty Four will be released on March 23rd, a few days after Tom’s 18th birthday. Be sure to snag it.
