Friends with Benefits Twins (Gem Club Re-imagination)
First off, calling anything a “re-imagination” is a fantastic idea and should be used more often by bands and artists. Second, this version of Gem Club’s “Twins,” is one of the most inventive and brilliant re-works I have heard in a long time. It’s dark, it’s harshly reverbed and sounds like it’s been pushed through a chainsaw…but in the best possible way.
The new side project from Brian Bissart of BigColor just released a three song EP under the moniker Friends With Benefits. This project is a brooding and emotional psych pop experiment that howls at you with a fervor that builds and builds and finally explodes with pulsating drums, and twirling noise effects. When listening to FWB, I can’t help but be reminded of another psyched out glam pop favorite, Glitter Bones, not surprising, they happen to be close friends with Bissart.
So the story goes, Menomena and Glitter Bones got together and ate a bunch of acid, they kidnapped Youth Lagoon, corrupted him, and he was forever changed. Friends With Benefits is the result. I’ll take two.

Last night was the second time I was lucky enough to catch these talented young gents live. With Chicago’s Young Man, fronted by 22 year old Colin Caulfield, the brilliance runs deep and the need for special effects are minimal. It’s truly a pleasure to experience a live show that out shines an artist’s recorded work. Doesn’t happen that often. Listen to this amazing track above and watch the live recording below. So good.

Glitterbones The Dark Tide
This track is such a tease from Chicago experimental glam-pop duo Glitter Bones. Their latest single “The Dark Tide” encompasses so many elements it’s hard to describe their sound as anything but a glittering UFO, consisting of layered vocals and percussion with subtle pulsating drums that continue to evolve as this force descends from another galaxy down onto earth. Captain Jean-Luc Picard requested a house band with Animal Collective vibes and Minus Story/Menomena vocals for the Starship Enterprise, luckily Glitter Bones was up for the challenge.
It’s been almost a year since their last release, and having played a recent show with Supreme Cuts, OOoOo, and Butterclock, I have a hunch a full length release is on the horizon. Def keep ya eyes peeled.

Hope you’re ready for some funky ass beats that break that shit down. Chicago’s The-Drum is takin’ hip hop on an acid trip and gettin’ all kinds of strange. This new brand of psyched out sex beats is so up my alley that within the first minute, this track had me dripping. It’s sex, drugs and RnB…I’ll hold it down, if you will.
This track is doing seriously bad things to my lady parts. Lettin’ that anticipation build for The-Drum’s EP Heavy Liquid to finally drop this September.
