The first time I wrote about newcomer and solo act, Gracie I described his For Summer EP as “a beautiful blend of organic and electronic, with slightly strained vocals, and funk stained beats that tickle the back of your neck with 90’s RnB nostalgia, is really just the tip of the iceberg for Andrew Balasia. So many things come together so perfectly on this EP, it almost feels like it’s wrong.
It’s music that is wise beyond it’s years and drowning in ingenuity. There is so much more to come from this effervescent young artist, that I’m already tripping over my own feet to be first in line to hear what he comes up with next. Lead me down the rabbit hole Gracie…”And lead me down the rabbit hole he did. Gracie’s second release, Treehouse, this time on Small Plates Records, shows the progression of a young artist, emerging from the shadows and into the spotlight, showcasing his abilities as a producer, building intricate songs with so much complexity, it takes more than a few listens to understand how deep these they actually run. Harping on childhood fantasies, Treehouse takes you on an emotional deep dive that is sexy and sultry and dare I say jovial, all in an effort to draw you in and have you so caught up in the moment you forget where you are.
I wanted to note that this album is also an interesting juxtaposition between childhood nostalgia and young adult tribulations, the kind that occupy most of the hours of your day. If that was too subtle for you, I’m talking about sex. Innocence vs. corruption. You get the idea.
This will be Small Plates first 12” release, with the first 100 copies being pressed on gold vinyl, this is a special release that you’ll want to be a part of.

Glad to see the emerging music scene in Philly finally getting some love. Moon Bounce plays Connie’s Ric Rac with Gracie on March 16th in Philly. If you are in the area definitely check out this show.
Moon Bounce - ‘Telephone’
Corey Regensburg released the Darn Your Best Frock EP in May last year, heralding the birth of his Moon Bounce project - all clever bleeps, spacey samples and broken beats.
Regensburg has since been working on LP and ‘Telephone’ is an early taster; skittish and unnerving in a rich, jittery flux staged perfectly in this home made clip - grab the song below.

Gracie Southern Place Video
This is my favorite track off Gracie’s upcoming EP. Peep the vid that premiered today on Prefix below.
Prefix has premiered the beautifully dark and steamy, Feel Good Lost directed, video for Gracie’s “Southern Place”. It powers along like a steely dan chugging off in to the deep night scaring the shit out of you along its warpath. Do yourselves a solid and check it out.

Having already opened for Balam Acab in 2011, with an EP release due out on Small Plates in February, a host of high profile shows planned over the next few months, as well as a full length in the works, Andrew Balasia’s Gracie project is definitely one to watch this year.
It has been a very exciting 2012 at the Small Plates HQ. We can think of no better way to keep the party rollin’ than to bless you with the newest Gracie joint, Tryck R Treat, from the upcoming Treehouse EP. The bomb drops on February 7th but you can preorder that sucker here.

A List of EPs I Listened To A Lot in 2011
I know that title is a cop out, but I can’t say these are my only favorite EPs of 2011, because it just doesn’t work that like. My musical favorites don’t reset when the clock strikes midnight and the earth gets a year older. Nor do I get through all the music I had hoped to listen to within the confines of Western Civ’s lunar calendar. Like I’ve said a million times before, you can’t read the entire internet, nor should you.
So instead I put together a somewhat comprehensive list of mostly EPs, (maybe a few borderline albums and a couple 7”s), that I have really enjoyed over the passed several months, that were all released in 2011. I might do a list for full lengths and other goodies I missed over the weekend. Then again, I prob won’t. Hope you find a thing or two you missed this year.
Please send hate mail to: gluttonyisthenewblack@gmail.com. All insights/comments are welcomed, and I promise to reply by 2014.
