THE VIDEOS THAT MADE MY WEEK w/Holy Other, TOPS, Cold Specks, Nite Jewel, RxGibbs, Cough Cool, Harriet and Jon Phonics
Getting back into my emo hipster roots this week with a selection of vids that are more on the mellow side, plus a live performance by Holy Other that you don’t want to miss. I didn’t include Grimes “Oblivion” video or CSLSX and I Break Horses Video for “Violent Sea” even though I really love both those songs, for the simple fact that I didn’t like the videos. My video picks this week have a theme of being very introspective and beautiful in an isolating way. Hope you dig.
HOLY OTHER - Yr Love (Live at Point Éphémère, Paris, 10 février 2012)
Nite Jewel - One Second of Love
Harriet - I Slept With All Your Mothers
Tops - Rings of Saturn
Cold Specks - Holland
Jon Phonics X BUG - Jack Duckworth
Cough Cool - Run Slow
RxGibbs - Silver
MIXTAPE MONDAYS (OR TUESDAYS)
Since the planet was pretty much checked the fuck out and still drunk on yule time tidings yesterday, I thought I would play catch up today and highlight some of my favorite mixtapes/compilations to come out in the last few months. All are just a free download away. Plus a pic of Winter Dre (hoodie included). Enjoy.
Slowed and Throwed Death Valley Mixtape by Scissoring
This one pretty much takes the cake, so you might want to stop reading right here. With everything from Raekwon, Neil Diamond, and ZZ Top, to My Bloody Valentine, Rollins Band, The Beach Boys and DMX, these tunes were selected as the soundtrack to your limousine cruise through the desert. Incredible. I love men who have a slightly sick sense of humor and can appreciate 90s rap just as much as My Bloody Valentine and Henry Rollins. DOWNLOAD the mix HERE.
Crash Symbols - Dope Mountain Fuck Vol. 2
The swell folks at Crash Symbols put together a great compilation of exclusive tracks from a bunch of their 2011 favorites. Stand out tracks from Pariah Carey, Pepepiano, Kam3L3iN, Some Ember (my feauture on Dylan drops later this week) and changemod, which is my love, Nate McKee of The Answer Page’s new project. His contribution to this comp is really great.
Two fantastic blogs came together to make a lovechild of epic proportions. Faves on this comp include: Hwood, Spaceghost, IVVVO and Smoke Room, plus new discoveries, Warm Thighs, Thought Tempo and Tony Devotion. DOWNLOAD the mix HERE.
Sun Glitters - It’s Cold Outside Mixtape
I’m super ADD and extremely fussy when it comes to tunes. Most of the time listening to a streaming mix w/o individual tracks is torture. Not the case with Sun Glitters mixes. From start to finish he hooks me up with all kinds of ear pleasing goodies. His latest mix includes Balam Acab, RIVKA, Evenings, Elite Athlete, Jessica Bailiff and Holy Other. Yum. Stream the mix it’s entirety below.
Sewer Greats Volume III
Part three in a year-long series of compilations with exclusives from some of my favorite seapunks. This comp gets real fucking weird, so you really don’t want to skip anything. Tracks/Remixes on this comp from: AyGeeTee, Crim3s, Coyote Clean Up, Body Cheetah, Shisa, JSHIH, and Teams. Great stuff. DOWNLOAD the mix HERE.
A List of EPs I Listened To A Lot in 2011
I know that title is a cop out, but I can’t say these are my only favorite EPs of 2011, because it just doesn’t work that like. My musical favorites don’t reset when the clock strikes midnight and the earth gets a year older. Nor do I get through all the music I had hoped to listen to within the confines of Western Civ’s lunar calendar. Like I’ve said a million times before, you can’t read the entire internet, nor should you.
So instead I put together a somewhat comprehensive list of mostly EPs, (maybe a few borderline albums and a couple 7”s), that I have really enjoyed over the passed several months, that were all released in 2011. I might do a list for full lengths and other goodies I missed over the weekend. Then again, I prob won’t. Hope you find a thing or two you missed this year.
Please send hate mail to: firstname.lastname@example.org. All insights/comments are welcomed, and I promise to reply by 2014.
P.S. If Group Tightener ever ships their shit, Dead Gaze’s 10” would most definitely be on this list.
P.S.S. Clearly not a good year for hip hop outside of Shabazz Palaces, Serengeti and maybe one or two others.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS LIST?
This Will Destroy You Black Dunes + Holy Other Edit
This Will Destroy You just released a gorgeous 7″ vinyl single of their track ‘Black Dunes’ from the album Tunnel Blanket via Monotreme Records (Europe) and Suicide Squeeze Records (rest of the world). The A-side is a new edit of the album track. The B-side is the ‘Woman In The Dunes’ remix of the track by Berlin/Manchester-based rising star producer Holy Other.
Be sure to peep the ethereal Holy Other version of "Black Dunes" first. For the amount of bells and whistles in this tracks it’s insanely smooth and unfolds like ocean waves building and crashing onto the beach at night. In comparison, the original track is super heavy and dark. Love how Holy Other breaths a ghostly airiness into his version. Both are fantastic.

The video of Holy Other’s live set should have tied with Teebs for the #1 spot on my video count down this week, but I’ma special kid and forgot about it. Silly. I have yet to see Holy Other live (they cancelled their LA show earlier this year), and if they don’t play SXSW this year, I will have to fly to the UK to see them. I can’t wait any longer. This video of Holy Other at Rewire Festival in Den Haag is dripping with genius, (and confirms Holy Other is actually a human, and not some ethereal reoccurring dream of mine).
If I make it to the UK for Holy Other’s show, you can believe you me there will be some groupie lovin’ taking place after the show. This I promise you.
If you follow me on Twitter you know I’ve been obsessing over Purity Ring’s live set at FYF Fest this past Saturday. Their live show sounds like a tropical infused Holy Other with The Knife like vocals. Megan James is a serious performer. Blew me away with her stage presence. And her voice…wow.
Their show included homemade noise machines, a drum that lit up when hit and hundreds of screaming fans. It felt you were watching one of the first Beatles performances. People were really really excited about it.
Peep the snippet of one of their unreleased tracks they played on Saturday. I apologize for the quality of the recording. Soundcloud apologizes too. Purity Ring still sounds great.
Foreign and dramatic and yet oddly familiar, like a warm summer night that lingers long enough for you to be swept up and enveloped in a sea of twinkling (electronic) stars. Beautifully original stuff out of Pittsburgh duo RIVKA. Be sure to listen to their heavy hitting self-titled record in it’s entirety that you can grab from their bandcamp. Def been on heavy rotation all month long.
The video for Kid Animal by kohnkepik, who has also done videos for Holy Other, Clams Casino and Happy Trendy is the nip slip generation’s response to the 1995 video for Smashing PumpkinsTonight Tonight. We’re all explorers across this vast jungle we call earth, searching for a purpose, something that will quell our infinite sadness, if only temporarily…
How To Dress Well Take It On (Holy Other Remix) Fan Video
It was only a matter of time before fans started getting weird with Holy Other. Giving How To Dress Well’s track Take It On the ghostly treatment, Holy Other has done a number on my psyche with this remix.
Watching this vid takes you so far down the rabbit hole, you wonder if you’ll ever be the same. Twisted images and rapturous beats, that can only be conjured up during a self-induced coma of the senses combine, forcing your brain to get cerebral just to stay alive.
Fucking kids these days. Made for a Cymatics project in his MADT 206 Class. Video by Stephen Nachtigall
Oh and this other fan vid is cool too. Disturbing in a good way. By Original Orol.
