White Ninja Touch Confusion

Check out the deep dive cultural experiment, that explores sacred pastimes through musical interpretations in The Nablus Project by Luke Carrell and Coco Zoabi.

During a recent film shoot in Nablus, French sound recordist Pierre Gauthier recorded the old city mosque’s Muezzin (the chosen person at a mosque who leads the call to prayer). The shape of the valley in which Nablus rests creates a massive composite reverb effect that gives his recitation an otherworldly feel as it booms out from the mosque in the city’s center.

The awe-inspiring recording led to the editors of Coco’s OCD and International Tapes hand picking a group to create a composition all using the same field recording as their subject and muse for a compilations that features exclusive tracks from Arc Light, Broken Boys, David Kanaga, Fiji Bijoux, Lee Noble, MEGAFORTRESS, Algodón Egipcio, and more.

Check out my favorite track off the comp above by White Ninja, taking funky soul beginnings and giving them a worldly, vintage feel. I am amazed with how they incorporated the field recording. So inventive.

MIXTAPE MONDAYS! With mixes from Bathetic Records, Slumberland Records, The Find Magazine, and La 3h Heure!

Hope everyone had a fantastic time ringing in the new year. Day one of 2012 couldn’t have been more perfect for me. I spent most of it at the beach, so wanted to include a pic of my amazing day above. Below are some of the best compilations to come out recentlly, with an array of music and genres, so there is something for everyone. Enjoy!

Bathetic Records - Expressway Curated by Dirty Beaches and William Cody Watson

Bathetic Records just released a free 2012 compilation as a way to say thanks for a great 2011 and kick off 2012 with a bang. The mix was curated by Alex Zhang Huntai of Dirty Beaches, and William Cody Watson of Pink Priest. With contributions from both both Dirty Beaches and WCW, Lee Noble, Ela Orleans, Cough Cool, Speculator and lots more, it’s a fantastic way to celebrate 2012.

Bob42jh Films About Ghosts Mix for The Find Magazine

The self proclaimed “humanitarian for hip hop,” Youtube channel C-leb has dropped another fantastic mix for The Find Magazine. Earlier this year, Bob captured my heart with his 42 song compilation called Fallen Skies along with his label’s first compilation and release, Friends and Family. Bob focuses on jazzy instrumental tunes with lots of hip hop and Japanese influences. Obscure is an understatement, but nonetheless, there are always plenty of gems to be uncovered. Jamz from Evenings, Emancipator, Urban Romantic City, Paul Dateh and more on this mix.

THE VIDEOS THAT MADE MY WEEK (OF GIVING THANKS) AWESOME:

#1 LEE NOBLE - PARENTS

I can’t express enough how much I appreciate artists that take the time to make real music videos. Lee Noble’s video for “Parents” pretty much blows everyone out of the water. Like some kind of deranged Tim Burton hallucination, after mixing Ambien and wine, Lee Noble’s video explores the concepts of reality and fantasy and how so often those lines become blurred. Directed by Ethan Feldbau, this video is just brilliant.

P.S. Lee Noble’s latest EP Horrorism, is out now via Bathetic Records. Go buy it. The bonus video of a Henry Rollins/Black Flag interview below is the homepage of Bathetic’s website. Fucking amazing.
