SXSW 2014 Interviews: London Grammar, Chlöe Howl, Young & Sick, Annie Mac, Tove Lo + more.

For this special edition of Best Fit’s All Apologies, we went backstage at SXSW to find out a little more about the people driving the hive of activity in a little more relaxed environment.

Want to know what bands pop trio London Grammar are crushing on? What food truck The Brits Critics Choice nominee Chlöe Howl would be? From Aussie electronic outfit Seekae, to popstar on the rise Young & Sick, to soulful songstress Mauhaut Mondino, Dallas crooner, Conner Youngblood, to the sweet and sexy Tove Lo to BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac, we caught up with some of the festival’s most tipped acts for a little downtime.

What does it feel like when you’re on stage performing?

Young & Sick: Like a jump into a nice heated pool.

London Grammar (Dan): A mixture of nerve wracking and just general excitement.

Tove Lo: All adrenaline. I love it.

Seekae: It’s changed a lot. It used to feel far more nerve-wracking, because we felt like outsiders. We were bringing computers and old gear onto stage when other people were just playing with guitars. But now, now we feel more comfortable. I think Alex feels quite a lot like Michael Jackson cos he’s just dancing all over the place. Now it feels good. Now it’s easy enough to do whilst drunk, which is good.

ASTR (Zoe): Awesome. Amazing. Like a wave.

If you were a food truck at SXSW, what type of food truck would you be?

Seekae: I reckon we’d definitely be something very unhealthy, because George, he can’t get enough of that BBQ sauce man. A gluten-free hot dog truck with endless amounts of BBQ sauce.

Annie Mac: The Kelis truck! I just think she is great. She is an incredible artist and she makes her own food and sauces!

Young & Sick: I would sell bananas and every banana would be a different flavour.

London Grammar (Dot): I’d be like Jerk Chicken, something chicken.

Mahaut Mondino: Expensive.

Conner Youngblood: A truck that just sells milkshakes.

Tove Lo: I would be a veggie Mexican place. I had the best veggie tacos at one the other day, and I was like, “This is what I’m going to eat for the rest of my life.”

ASTR (Zoe): We would be a fusion truck. Something fun and eclectic, probably gourmet.

Chloe Howl: I’d be Kelis’s food truck, so I could be Kelis.

Do you have a good luck charm?

ASTR (Zoe): I used to have a crystal I brought around, but then I said “Fuck luck, you just gotta live this shit.” (Adam): Maybe that’s why all our flights are fucked up, you need to bring that crystal around more.

Young & Sick: A coin that Max (my booking agent) gave me here at SXSW, it has the capital of Austin on it.

London Grammar (Dan): We have our tour manager. He is legendary, he’s called Sweeney. And uh, we don’t think we could ever do a gig without him now.

Tove Lo: I always wear my friend’s ring. She makes these rings called “Leontine,” I always wear that.

Seekae: Yeah. It’s probably Alex’s cataract glasses. He wears them on stage even when it’s dark. They’re these real big grandma glasses that give him this super power to just dance like a beast, and us play our best.

Chloe Howl: I wear these boots I’ve got on every time I’m on stage now. Otherwise I think I’ll fall down. I’m superstitious now.

Find out the rest of their answers after the jump!

Your Ultimate 2013 SXSW Essentials Guide

SXSW has been around since 1987 (music) and 1994 (interactive and film) and has become THEE essential annual music networking event to attend. Being the SXSW veterans that we are, Best Fit has compiled a list of essentials to ensure you maximize your experience in Austin this week. From the gear you’ll need to keep you on top of your game, to where to find the best eats, what to do in-between parties, how to get around, the coolest apps to download on your smartphone and more. Of course we’ve also got a few words of wisdom to keep in mind as you head into one crazy week of music.

Be sure to follow @BestFitMusic on Twitter for live coverage and daily diaries recapping all of the glory of SXSW from the previous days. So without further ado, we bring you our 2013 SXSW Essentials Guide.

Reserve External Battery
We promise you will need this no matter how few snapchats you send

The hottest new productivity tool at SXSW Interactive, Plancast helps you find out about events and other social activities ahead of time so you don’t miss out on them. The Plancast online calendar can manage all your relevant plans with filters, and dynamically sync your calendar with other calendars like Outlook, or ical. It’s amazing.

Your ears will thank you.

Coconut Water

Whatever hangover remedy you think works, you’re wrong. Staying hydrated is the best way to avoid hangovers, headaches, hunger, and not dying. Coconut water actually hydrates better than any other fluid on the planet due to it’s massive amounts of potassium and electrolytes, your body will thank you.

Mini Emergency Kits for Him & Mini Emergency Kits for Her
Includes travel must-haves in a case the size of a deck of cards to toss in your bag: lip balm, dental floss, breath freshener, hairspray, nail polish remover, emery board, stain remover, mending kit, safety pin, extra buttons, earring backs, clear elastics, deodorant towelette, pain reliever, tampon, and an adhesive bandage.

B100 Vitamins
This complex vitamin made up of mostly B6, B12, Thiamin and Folic Acid is what celebrities get shots of when they have to perform but are feeling like shit. It’s great for sluggish mornings, sobering you up if you got drunk too quickly, and just feeling on top of your game. These are my lifeline.

Face and Body Spray Sunscreen:

Liquid makes a mess + you already put makeup and clothes on. Sunscreen wears off after a few hours in most cases, use this handy spray on your face and exposed body parts after a few hours in the sun. You don’t even have to rub that shit in!

Lara Bars:
Partied too hard last night and missed all the free breakfast tacos this morning? Good thing you packed a snack! Available at just about every grocery and drugstore in America, vegan and gluten free, come in flavors like Cherry Pie and Peanut Butter & Jelly, and they surprisingly don’t taste like bark.

Streetwise Austin Map
Austin isn’t that big, but when filled with thousands of festival goers, pop-up tents set up everywhere, spotty wifi, and events spread out all over the city, it’s easy to get lost and miss your party/show entirely. No matter how direction savvy you are/gps apps you have on your phone, a map is always a good thing to carry during a festival of this size. Plus this guy is laminated and in 3-D!

As much as they say all the booze at SX is free, well that’s only half true. Plus how many Sweet Tea Vodka’s can you drink before you feeling like you might barf? Save yourself the energy and your lunch and get saucy on your 20 minute walk to the venue. There are liquor stores conveniently located just about everywhere to ensure you can refuel throughout the day.

Comfortable Shoes:
We’re not going to tell you what shoes to wear but just know Austin is mostly dirt, not to mention the thousands of people littering (yeah we’re sad too) in the streets, and just the sheer amount of walking you end up doing. Don’t be that asshole in heels/flip flops that has to buy shoes there.

Unless you like walking around all day scowling at the sun and working on your frown lines.

It can get pretty cold at night.

Just about every venue will ID you, regardless of badge, wristband or wrinkles.

A lot of places don’t accept plastic.

SXSBest Week Ever: Diary of Indie’s Favorite Party Girl SXSW 2012 Wrap Up: Tuesday

With one of the best SX’s behind me the inevitable wrap up post(s) are probably ripping through your tumblr feed like a shit faced drunk girl at the 24 hour pizza joint, which can be funny but also a bit much, especially since it’s only 10:30pm. This bitch isn’t allowed to take shots anymore. So in the spirit of keeping things like SXSW, shorter than usual but still amazing, sensory overload and so much fun to take part in, I decided to create a very Dre style rating system for each day, include the TOP pictures and quotes from the week, and of course all of the music that made my SXSBest Week Ever.

If you saw my massive Guide to SXSBest Week Ever mixtape, I’ll tell you upfront there were a handful of bands from the list I was extremely excited I was able to see, a few pleasant surprises, and only one or two flops. Overall I couldn’t have asked for a more incredible experience, with particular attention to the countless number of awesome people I got a chance to hang with, people that run my favorite music outlets, labels, venues, as well as the artists themselves. That’s really what SXSW 2012 was about for me, spending time with the people I love. No “Get To Know Your Neighbor” this week, instead welcome to an inside peek at SXSW 2012 through the Diary of Indie’s Favorite Party Girl. Enjoy!

Hot N’ Ready House 2012 SXSBest Recipe 4 A Successful Week:
EOTB (Peter)
¼ Phantom Kicks (Tanner)
½ IGIF (Conor)
Small Plates Records (Conor and Eamon)
Dailybeatz (Chris)
Epicsauce (Kevin)
1 Hawt photographer babe (Jenna)
3 bags vodka soaked Gummy Bears courtesy of GITNB/The 405 SX Correspondent (Me)

Shake, stir and add any combination of music and parties that you so desire. Results may vary but guaranteed to be fucking great.

Sidenote: For every day that my voice diminished, the number of Hot n’ Ready’s in our apartment increased. By the last night we looked like an episode of Hoarders, it was gross.
