I discovered Dylan Travis and his band at the time, Man/Miracle when I was living in San Francisco in the spring of 2008. I was instantly drawn to his live performance that exuded so much heart, he held nothing back on stage. Not to mention, Man/Miracle plays some extremely catchy tunes that just make you want to smile. This is actually my second interview with Dylan, the first being an unreleased video interview we did last May. Maybe the video will come out one day when he is super famous and a huge deal. Since Dylan’s very first song, his music has touched me so deeply. He is one of those artists that I have wholeheartedly followed throughout his musical career, and a big reason for that is his passion on such a grand scale. He’s not just singing to sing, these songs are his catharsis.
Dylan says ultimately his music delivers positive vibes and dark but reassuring hope for humanity. When you really dig deep, from his Man/Miracle beginnings, to his Otherness project with Dave of Elephant and Castle, and now Some Ember, you can feel Dylan’s energy in all of them, and that energy burns so bright. He gives off an aura on stage, and his voice carries a feeling throughout his songs that wraps itself around you and then melts slowly into the earth until you are fully enveloped. Watching this enigmatic artist develop over the years has been such a pleasure. To have the opportunity to interview him a second time, well it’s really an honor.
If Disney ever made a high budget adult version of Aladdin, I would imagine Some Ember’s tunes are what would fuel the soundtrack surrounding the villainous Sorcerer as he enters the scene, surrounded by a thick, murky cloud of darkness. A force, cascading down upon the ground.
Take a listen to Dylan’s Some Ember project above and below, and take a few minutes of your time to read my in-depth interview with one of the most interesting people I have ever met. I have to say, I think it’s my favorite interviews to date. Introducing Some Ember.
AA: So, how goes it?
DT: I’m good, listening to Depeche Mode. You?
AA: Nice. Listening to Gang Starr.
DT: Ha! I have some Gang Starr on vinyl.
AA: That doesn’t surprise me at all. So to jump right into things, I have been a fan of your tunes for years now. I have watched your sound get all kinds of weird and evolve and do so many cool things, so I wanted to do a very long overdue deep dive with ya. My goal is to gain some insight into what you have been doing in 2011 and plan to do in 2012.
DT: Right on. I am smoking a THC e-cig right now in 2011 and in 2012 I will likely smoke it again.
AA: Hahahahahaha. YES.
DT: But yeah, I’m down, what would you like to know?Listen to more from Some Ember and read the rest of the interview after the jump!

Slippin’ Through The Cracks Episode #2 Wanda and Wonder
This marks the second installment of my new weekly series where I talk about albums/artists I was late to the game on, and now am really wishing I hadn’t slept. Better late than never right? Read episode #1 featuring Oscar + Martin HERE.
Wanda and Wonder is not new and not old. They are not hard, nor are they soft. They are neither here nor there, in fact they are just about everywhere. Instances of this influence, flashes of that influence, Wanda Wonder were able to encapsulate so many genres of the past while adding their own silly twist on the future in one four song EP.
The vocals waiver somewhere between Billy Idol, The Cure and David Bowie, which you never really figure out, as you get lost in fancy claps and synth driven keys, amongst harmonized shrieks and heavily reverbed guitar riffs, you start to ask yourself, “Have I discovered a new genre?” A kind of glamwave disco punk, that we had hoped would be lead by bands like Apes and Androids in the uber hip trenches of the New York club scene. But instead, they missed their subway stop and continued onto Queens, Astoria, or somewhere far past Greenpoint, yet at other times, Wanda and Wonder sound nothing like this at all. Instead taking cues from hardly RnB but “inspired by” dance hits and adding their chameleon-like vocals that seem to transform almost entirely depending on the tune.
In certain songs, and parts of songs, I think the band is lackluster and annoying, these poppy, Brit punk wannabe kids living out their Green Day tribute band dreams, only a decade too late…then I realize they are fucking around, (Listen to their cover of Real McCoy’s 1993 jam, “Another Night” to see what I mean). This enigma of a band has caught my attention in just a few short songs, and well I just keep pressing play.
Most recently the band contributed to Just Like Honey Indie Podcast charity compilation with their rendition of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s hit, “Just Like Honey,” and well it’s pure genius. It’s a unique take on the classic that removes just about every ounce of shoegaze, and fills in the holes with a cooing quality that is really beautiful, while managing to hold onto the charm of the original tune that we love so much. Be sure to listen to Wanda and Wonder’s version below, and read more about the comp in my Mixtape Monday series post HERE.
Wanda and Wonder self-released a four song EP appropriately titled EPEP, on August 2nd 2010.

Pure Bathing Culture Silver Shore’s Lake
I cannot wait for Pure Bathing Culture to release some new tunes. Until they do, this track will be on repeat, like it has been…for months. The band just played a sold out show at Doug Fir in Portland with my pals Radiation City, so felt the need to revisit this jam. This duo in general, but this jam in particular reminds me of The Carpenters mixed with Kool and the Gang, which inherently reminds me of my childhood because that’s all my parents listened to when I was growing up. Images of those moving ocean clocks that would change colors come to mind. Oh nostalgia.
I have a hunch PBC is putting some tunes out on either Secretly Canadian or Fat Possum, and for reasons I can’t reveal, possibly Domino, sometime this spring. The duo are also in the San Francisco indie rock outfit Vetiver, which is on Sub Pop. Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Love speculating though.

Cass is back on tour promoting his sophomore album Humor Risk, out on Domino Records. Lots of 90s nostalgia, a bit of the Shins, and obvious comparisons to Morrissey. Pumped to check out his live set as I’ve been a fan for some time now.

NEW MUSIC OUT TODAY ON CRASH SYMBOLS!
more below
Thanks to Dan Casey, aka Yalls, my wife and I can breath safe at night. Thanks to him we’re still alive today, sucking down good Oakland air in the East Bay (more commonly the “Easy Bay” to those who call it home), while he might have just left us to die where our US Airways flight dropped us off in San Francisco, still fresh from West Virginia. So, it’s no exaggeration for me to say that thanks to Yalls, America will win the space race. As plans unfurl for a new Yalls-absence-suppressor in more solid form , Crash Symbols is proud to inaugurate its new series of lamentably fake 12”s with “Vapid Glitch Vow”. More than just an anagram of my name, it is uniquely Yalls; soul-funk poptronica driven by Casey’s incredible idiosyncratic beatwork, and lent further support by the inclusion of a totally indulgent ten minute extended mix that is absolutely necessary for fullest enjoyment.

Giraffage Moments
Peep the opening track off Giraffage’s fantastic immersion into the world of new wave electronic pop, aptly titled “Moments.” This song is just so luscious. I want to eat this track with a spoon, and then I want to eat some more.
With diverse samples complexly layered to create a dense, richness to his sound, Giraffage is able to set himself apart from the thrones of artists lumped into this “electro/pop/experimental/chillwave” genre. He sampled Minus The Bear’s “Absinthe Party At The Fly Honey Warehouse.” for this track, and I have to admit, ten years later, that song is still a fave.
But don’t stop at the first song, from start to finish you can’t help but get caught up in the Giraffage moment. Charlie Yin’s debut album, Comfort is just that. Take it in and get lost in it.

Seventeen Evergreen Polarity Song Video
HA! The lead singer was my neighbor for years when I lived in the “up and coming” “sketchy” neighborhood in San Francisco that bordered on North Beach and Chinatown called “China Heights.” Seventeen Evergreen’s video premiered on Gorilla vs Bear today. Congrats guys!

Giraffage LUV
This new Giraffage track has a vintage, 1970’s cutesy-gore feel that oh so appropriate for this post October 31st occasion. LUV is droned out, electro-pop loveliness giving way to inebriation induced flutters in your chest, helping you keep time, while you dance the night away with your infatuation of choice for the evening.
Even the title of this track couldn’t be more fitting. Perfect for soaking the last moments up of All Hallows Eve before drying your eyes with the sunlight of a new day. That’s how I see anyway.
