Young Magic Drawing Down The Moon Video + Galapagoose/S. Maharba Remixes
It’s no secret I am kind of obsessed with the electronic, experimental trio that goes by the name Young Magic. Taking cues from all over the world to build an album that has a cultural melting pot vibe infused with some of the most creative drums rhythms, harmonies, samples and beats to ever grace your ears, I felt it necessary to once again highlight this band and the creative releases they are producing.
Since releasing their debut album Melt in March, Young Magic has released a handful of videos and a stellar remix EP with contributions by some of the most promising electronic artists in the scene right now. The two remixes that were instant stand outs for me were produced by London’s S. Maharba and Australia’s Galapagoose.
Galapagoose & Wooshie’ “Helium Flip” is picked apart and jagged, with droned the fuck out vocals and effects that make you feel like the equilibrium has been blown out of proportion. This is such a unique approach that sounds nothing like Young Magic’s version of “You With Air,” yet maintains the trademark qualities that characterize Young Magic’s sound. It’s a trip in true This Thing fashion and I’m loving it.
S.Maharba takes the opposite approach delicately smoothing out Young Magic’s heavy “Night In The Ocean” and slows it way down making you feel like you are floating across the night sky overlooking a massive ocean below. You can actually feel the cool air rippling across your face as welcomed chills run up your spine. Sexy is an understatement.
I know this video isn’t a remix but my guess is most of you reading this didn’t buy Young Magic’s debut album Melt, so haven’t heard the incredible tracks not available for stream or download. I put one in my “Dance Like Everyone’s Watching” Bonus Mix. Ssshhhhhhh. Yesterday Young Magic released a video for “Drawing Down The Moon.” One of their lighter, more euphoric feeling tracks with a big tribal bass vibe to it.

MIXTAPE MONDAYS! with Faws’ mix for The 405, Young Magic’s bits and pieces mix, BBU’s bell hooks, Earnest Endeavor’s mix for Sonic Router and the strangest of strange from Rose Quartz and Police Academy 6!
The 405 Plastic Platform C09: Faws
The elusive Irish producer, Faws made serious waves in 2011 with his EP Antonym, and started 2012 off right by dropping a sick little mixtape for UK outfit The 405. This mix gives some insight into the young artist’s influences, which were unclear besides the obvious Mount Kimbie and Burial similarities. Love that he has Portishead and Dr Dre in there. Makes so much sense. STREAM HERE.

Young Magic - Maps C A S S E T T E
My favorite act of 2011 and 12, with what is sure to be a top 10 album of the year, Young Magic released “The Maps Mix last week, which is a collection of Young Magic rarities, remixes, demos, field recordings, flips, beats, b-sides from Melt and whatever else they made over the last year that didn’t fit the LP. It’s a home for all the other sounds we’ve been making…a rough beat tape of sketches cut together in a moment. Think of it as our sonic scrapbook.”

bell hooks BBU Mixtape
There’s no denying Mishka has proven to be one of the illest lifestyle outlets in the game. Everything they produce is just top notch. This BBU mixtape is their latest effort showing the music world just how on top of their game they are. I am trying to evolve and stop hating on new rap, and this BBU mixtape is the start of that for me. There is a big Southside Chicago feel to this mixtape, which I dig, and the more I listened the more this sounded reminded me of old school jamze from RJD2 and even Too Short, and at other times it felt like 1978 when funk and soul were beginning to blend into what would soon be called “rap music”. Overall there is this throwback vibe that BBU is able to transport into 2012 unleashing a refreshing update while paying tribute his hip hop roots. Oh and did I mention it’s fucking funny? Rap should always be like this.

Young Magic Night In The Ocean (S. Maharba Serpent Love Song Remix)
To celebrate the release of the Young Magic’s debut LP Melt dropping today, it’s only fitting they would get one of the hawtest producers in the game, S. Maharba to sex up this track special for VDay. This remix is something serious. So…should I just get naked now?
I put the original version of this track on my “One Night Stand” Guest Mix I did for Live For The Funk. You can download the entire mix HERE.
Young Magic’s debut album, Melt, is out now via Carpark and comes complete with a silver half moon pendant. Buy it HERE.

Young Magic Melt LP Stream
Of course Melt is the only thing I have been listening to since the album stream premiered yesterday on Hype Machine. I have posted about Young Magic so many times GITNB is starting to feel like a goddamn tween’s Tiger Beat-esque fan site more than an indie music blog. Fuck it. Support the music you love. At this point, it’s fair to say, I’m not the only one falling for this trio’s enchantment.
Carpark finally gives us more details as to what the band’s album will be like describing it as, “Heavily informed by West African rhythms, Brainfeeder hip-hop, UK bass, and 60s psychedelic soul. Young Magic’s full-length debut, Melt, expands on their varied aesthetic, at once electronically sequenced and completely organic. Containing recordings from ten different countries, the album flaunts new facets at each turn.”
So pumped for this release. Read my previous posts on Young Magic here, here and here.
After about 15 listens, stand out tracks are Night in the Ocean, Sparkly, Driving Down The Mountain, You With Air, with Slip Time, Sanctuary and Jam Karet taking the top spots, but really, the entire album is a mystified wonderment of darkness-striken delight. Think I dig? Just a little…

Young Magic Night In The Ocean Video + Sparkly Into The Open Session
When someone asks me who they should be listening to, without an ounce of hesitation, my answer over the last several months has been, “Young Magic.” I’ve caught countless live performances, listened to their four singles thousands of times, and written about them more than once. This band brings so much to the table from recordings, to performance, aesthetic, they are the real deal. There is no doubt in my mind 2012 will be their year.
The video for “Night In The Ocean,” (my favorite Young Magic song thus far) sums up the band pretty well. Sexy, strange, vast, with lots of earthly elements that span the entire globe.
Watch the band’s just first live session for In The Open, which was recorded in the woods, during their stop in San Francisco while on tour with Youth Lagoon below.

MIXTAPE MONDAYS! LFTF GITNB ONE NIGHT STAND EDITION
First let me say thanks to the swell folks of Live For The Funk for gettin my ego all krunk sayin’ they dig tha way I spit that game when I’m biznass drunk. Heh. LFTF hit me wantin’ to know if I would tag up their blaag w/some Dre Dre goodness, and being the glutton that I am, you know I couldn’t resist.
If y’all have ever read my tweets or blog before then you know I have a crippling sex addiction that has relegated me to spending most nights within the confines of my apartment, all in effort to ensure the City of Angels is kept safe from my ravenous clutches. Lucky for you, that means I spend a large majority of my free time, ‘diggin’ in the crates’ for dope beats to share with y’all. For this special post I thought I would combine the two (sex addiction and music), cuz like Biggie, I’ve been in this game for years, I wrote me a manual, a step by step booklet, for you to get your (sex) game on track…and set the mood while you’re at it. Also, I didn’t feel like making any year end lists besides this one, fuck year-ends, live in the moment. Biggie sure did.
These songs will ensure you set the mood without terrifying your new friend into thinking you’re a serial killer. You will not find any The Weeknd or Keith Sweat here, just some chilled out sex beats that will make anyone want to take their clothes off with you, even if you did meet 30 minutes before the bar closed. It’s cool, we’ve all been there. Throw this playlist on next time and anticipate smooth (or rough if you’re into that) sailing all night. (Please play in order to maximize results)
Side Note: Please do not light any candles or incense, just make sure you have toilet paper in your bathroom. Oh and if a girl asks you to slap her during sex, do it. Trust me.

YOUNG MAGIC - NIGHT IN THE OCEAN/SLIP TIME 7”, October 2011
YOUNG MAGIC - WITH YOU/SPARKLY 7”, February 2011
Having only heard four recorded tracks, but witnessing two stellar live performances, I’ve quickly fallen obsessively in love with Australian trio Young Magic. The solo project, turned renegades of funk performance group, blend big bass drums not unlike Purity Ring, with a dark witchhouse vibe that is a subtle backdrop for chanting female vocals in support of an almost rapping male lead. The best way to understand this band is to see them live. You’ll feel like you’re at a party with Hunter S. Thompson in no time.
I know I joke about wanting to sleep with bands, but this time I’m serious. Hawt is an understatement, and that’s before you even turn on their tunes. Witchhaus, hipster swoon.

Rarechild Common Crime
What do you get when you mix Youth Lagoon tour mates, Young Magic, some serious 90s-esque hip hop beats and vocals slightly reminiscent of Brandon Boyd of Incubus, (not that I’m complaining one bit), well you get Rarechild. I can’t help but compare this project’s larger than life big beat feel and performance art qualities to those of the lovable Canadians Born Gold and Purity Ring. I really haven’t quite figured this project out yet, all I know is I’m quickly falling in-fatuation with every listen. Thank god for Brooklyn.
