CYMBALS Candy Bar + No Bad Decisions (Video)

I love everything about UK ensemble CYMBALS. From the shrill, strained vocals, to the xylophone effects, to the cheeky exhilaration that makes you want to dance, but not too much so you still look cool. CYMBALS did the hipster shuffle onto the indie scene in 2011 with their fantastic EP Unlearn, that instantly sold out. With ties to James Yuill, D/R/U/G/S and Dream Cop, the housey, dance influence is apparent with the help of synthesizers and jazzy trumpet effects, blended with a guitar driven sound creating this charming lo-fi indie rock, but we like to dance vibe, in the vein of bands like Hot Chip and Cut Copy.

Well the boys are back, and this time they’ve kept everything I loved about Unlearn, while toning down the tropical, percussion heavy notes in exchange for simple pitchy samples, catchy harmonies, all the while keeping the versatility to their sound that made them an underground fave. Ranging from smooth and chilled out electronic pop vibes, to electric guitar infused with dancey rhythm sections, CYMBALS sound is just so infectious, I think I’m obsessed. Sideways Sometimes is one of those April releases I’m really pumped about.

CYMBALS Sideways, Sometimes ltd edition vinyl drops 4/21 and DL on 4/23 via Tough  Love Records, pre-order HERE.

deadCat Delecate Daughters

“Delecate Daughters” is a super distorted, dreamy pop song with a glimmer of scratchy psych that gets under your skin and tickles your bones. The duo from Atlanta, deadCat have an oddly endearing quality to their music that keeps you coming back for more. This might just be shitty recording, but this song with unearthed bells and reverbed vocals that bring the percussion center stage make for quite an interesting take on lofi pop recording. And just when you decide you’re ready for more, it all stops suddenly.

“Bitches” is this lovely Latin-influenced whisper down a barely lit corridor, chasing shadowy images in the dark kinda jam. It feels like a warm summer night love song. It’s really sexy in this unconventional, Calvin Klein hipster kinda way.

These two songs flow so well together, I have a hunch they are part of a much bigger offering from deadCat. At least I hope so.

Take the time to listen to both of deadCat’s latest singles from Mexican label Bad Pop’s Bandcamp HERE.

Gorgeous Bully Who Do You Think You Are + Stamp

I fucking love this. Lo-fi Americana that’s upbeat and fun. Gorgeous Bully has this simple, infectious, Coma Cinema feel, but with much more of a harsh crunch to his sound. And a lot less emo. It’s Vagrant records teen angst ala Saves The Day/The Get Up Kids, with hints of Weezer’s Blue album sprinkled about just for kicks. Which is a refreshing change of pace from the chilled out sex beat vibes I generally lean towards.

With catchy lyrics like, “Just who do you think you are, some fucking supernova,” that speak to you almost directly, I’m a fan without even trying. I’d like to think Gorgeous Bully has that Cloud Nothings 2011 album effect. It’s pop-punk nostalgia at it’s finest.

The Young and Obese drops Feb 20th via Art is Hard Records, and will be available as a ltd edition cassette, packaged in a custom designed cigarette packet. Be sure to peep the pic of the packaging below. Pretty sweet. Pre-order HERE.

Two Apples in a Cherry Tree

Gathered Ghosts Two Apples in a Cherry Tree

So in love with the latest single from Javier Saurez (of Craft Spells) side project Gathered Ghosts. Reminds me of my first love, summery, a little awkward, but oh so carefree, kinda like two apples in a cherry tree. He included the adorable lyrics that I just had to share.

All i see, is two apples in a cherry tree, what’s the use in the analogy, you and me, love you always. Apogee, the point of orbit where the earth is free, that’s the place i always tend to be, oh when, when i’m with you. All I know, is that i never want to see you go. Never want to ever break your heart, or make you start doubting our love. Grow with me, two apples in a cherry tree, who did say it’s not supposed to be, was it the jealous leaves? Green and yellow…

If you haven’t downloaded Gathered Ghosts wonderful self-titled, you need to do that now. It’s free. CLICK HERE to do so.

Plaitum Temptress + Diamondii

If “Tempress” doesn’t make you want to love the one your with, I don’t think anything will. And just to clarify, when I say “love,” I mean “slow fuck”. This tune is a stray from the London duos mostly scratchy, electronic dead girl dance jamz, in exchange for some alluring, come hither vibes, with simple guitar chords, heavy bass and lots of fuzz. Peep “Diamondii” below for a taste of the more upbeat witch-dance goods.

These angels of electronic, heart-broken anthems fall in the same vein as Crystal Castles and Chew Lips, which happen to be two of my favorites, so of course I dig this. Plaitum is definitely onto something, now they just need to capitalize on it, and rip that shit open. So close. Keepin’ an eye on these two in 2012.

Body Cheetah & Messed Up Coyote Shawty

Like a deep south hip hop experiment that dripped through the cracks in the floors and into the basement where a Mississippi experimental psych band was practicing, this nightmarish dream known as “Shawty” has surfaced as a result. The collaboration between NY projects Body Cheetah and Messed Up Coyote just dropped this mind fuck of a psych hop EP Clang that has made me realize the kids are not alright, but probably better off anyways.

If that band The Darkness started taking drugs again, I would imagine they would aspire to sound like a much gayer version of this. Whatever is happening here, I like it, and I want it in and around me.

MY FAVE VIDEOS OF THE (LAST TWO) WEEKS

#7 TEAMS & AYGEETEE - Peace Corps of the Mind

I was in San Francisco last Sunday, so missed my countdown. I’m making up for it this week with extra videos to ensure you stay in bed longer and relax as much as possible today.

I fucking love Sean Bowie, and this video is exactly why. My favorite seapunk makes some of the funkiest chilled out disco sex beats around, and this collab with AyGeeTee is a personal fave. This video is so great, I’ve had it on repeat all weekend. Indie needs more choreographed dancing in their world.

Yalls Dark Ray Light mp3 + Video

Peep my second favorite track (and now video) released by Yalls thus far, off of the Cultus Vibes Compilation that I wrote about extensively when it dropped a few weeks ago. It’s a great DIY label started by the chillest of all the bros, Jamison of Teen Daze.

Dan Casey, the mastermind behind Yalls has the ability to create these bubbly, funk heavy lullaby-esque, pop jamz that are just so damn catchy. They way he layers tracks is a trip and so much fun to explore listen after listen. He dropped a sweet lil’ vid to go with this track too.
